First of all its nice to know that you are taking a lot of interest in your son's application. However, you should allow your son to look into these things and browse the university websites and the requirements so that he understands and gets to know a lot of things regarding the universities, course work etc.

Regarding your application, can you be a little more specific as to which course he has applied? This time UTD is rather unpredictable with its admits but with your son's profile, he has pretty good chances. His GPA is less but his GRE and TOEFL scores are good enough according to me. Again, these universities look holistically at a student's profile and SOP and LORs play an important part in getting an admit.
