ummm, Wat course do u wanna do? Wat are imp criteria for u - cost, internship chances, research, placements, profs, weather, no of indian students, TA/RA chances, MS or PhD.....There are a LOTTA factors that lead u to choose a uni. For ur profile u can try U minesotta (but its FREAKING cold). or Maybe CMU (which is quite expensive). Safe options would be rutgers (expenisve)....but if u are course specific, it varies....like Oregon State wont feature in the top 15..but its among the best for analog VLSI....U massachusetts amherst is nowhere near MIT, but its SUPERB for digital VLSI.

So u'll hv to see wat courses. Choose about 20 unis at a time. Keep posting them and get opinion. then choose 20 more (on a diff criteria)....finally make a list of 5 or 6. Some ppl usually keep 2 ambitious, 2 moderate and 2 safe unis...but the order is urs to choose.

    All the best!

Thanks Akshay, actually I was looking something in the Networks or Embedded systems side.

And do you think I can apply for CMU? I heard it was in the top ten university rankings.

And I was hoping to get aid somewhere but I don't mind paying for the tuition fee. But I want to get an admit into a top university as it would help me land in a decent job.

Somebody told me that I might get into a very good university like UCB or UCLA if I tell them that I wouldn't require financial assistance. Is it true?

No doubt u may get an admit from CMU, provided u strengthen ur app with strong SOP & LOR. Though its costly worth studying there once in lifetime.
finances is never a major criteria for ur admit in top unis, they lookout for something in u, that keeps u apart from thousands of applicants.
pls do proper research on unis & shortlist them.

Do they really look for a good CGPA in UG? I mean, mine is a bit low. So, will that be a concern?

What can I do to overcome that?

According to my knowledge most of the public universities are acad centric. But u can always compensate them with ur good gre score, relevant work exp, research papers and not to forget STRONG SOP & LOR.

ASU has good chances. USC too is within reach. GaTECH is ambitious. U may try. But it'll be reaching to ur maximum stretch.
About NCSU, if rayleigh is the same as the highly ramked NCSU then it'll be tough. Otherwise, am not too sure. U can check with maximus199. He/she would be able ti guide u better. Or u can check abt NCSU rayleigh with other seniors
