    Hi cherukuri_ajay,
Thanks a lot for your response. If possible, can you also throw some light on what some of these universities lay emphasis on? It'd really help.. some people told me getting admits from CMU, Cornell, UT at Austin and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign is too tall a task for me looking at my acads, but from what you say there still seems to be hope in Cornell, CMU and UT at Austin. Can you please elaborate a little further?
    Thanks again!

    Hi,

I'm not very certain about my choice of universities. As it turns out very few of these have Spring sessions.
    I have some questions:
    1. Could you please suggest a suitable list looking at my profile? I would like to apply to some that are tough, some moderate and some that are easy to get admits to.
    2. What is the total cost of applications to say about 8 universities likely to be?
    3. Also, as I am awaiting my TOEFL scores and they should arrive in a week or so, would it be ok to wait for this period before I start applying?
    4. I need some help and info on getting started with the process.
    5. What is the possibility of financial aid for my profile in these universities?

I know the questions are many but any advice and information you share would be helpful to me. Really appreciate the help.

    Thanks!

    Hi

List of Safe Universities : (Chances of getting admit is higher than 80%)

    University of Texas--Austin
    University of Michigan--Ann Arbor
    University of Pennsylvania
    University of Pittsburgh
    University of California--Los Angeles

List of Moderate Universities : (Chances of you getting admit is atleast 30%)

    Carnegie Mellon University
    University of California--Berkeley
    Georgia Institute of Technology
    California Institute of Technology
    University of Illinois--Urbana-Champaign

List of Dream Universities : (Chances of you getting admit is less than 10%)

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology
    Stanford University
    Harvard University

Application cost varies from university to university, you can find out that on their respective website.

Financial aid depends on your profile and when you are applying. The earlier you apply the more chances you have of financial aid.

To start the processing, all you have to do is start collecting documents like transcripts, financial documents, 10th and 12th certificate attested, work experience, SOP's and LOR's. After applying send these certificates in a folder to universities. Once getting admit from them i.e confirmation letter or i20, start working towards facing interview at the embassy, clear it and have a blast!

    All the Best!

Thanks very much for the detailed response Sherzil .. It's very helpful!! One more thing.. can you please specify what you feel the emphasis is laid on in some of the universities you have mentioned.. is there a particular reason why UT at Austin is in the Safe list and Cal Tech is in the moderate list?

Also, how much importance is given to work experience? As my UG % is not very high I was hoping to compensate for that in some way with my work-ex which would be 2.5 yrs by the time i apply.

    Thanks a ton!

    Hello vidya1987,

    2) TOEFL : Scheduled

    5) 10th : 88%
    6) Sun Certified Java Programmer

Have you got any thoughts like Fall is better than Spring Session ? I am in a dilemma over the same.

    Hi Amber,
I wouldn't be the right person to advise you on the universities since I am myself in a dilemma - various forums and people have different opinions on my chances in different universities, however the responses I have received on this forum have been the most encouraging till now! My list is present in this thread and Sherzil has categorized the universities very well into safe, mod and ambitious. I will put more thought into it and go through some more profiles before narrowing down to about 10 universities. If you have any thoughts, please share them too.
As for Spring vs. Fall - I was initially very keen on the Spring '13 session because frankly I should ve applied for Fall '12 but I got late. However, if you check out university websites, not many have spring sessions. Apart from this, I was told that even seats might be fewer in spring. That is why I am now contemplating the Fall session which offers a larger choice of universities.

    Hi Vidya,
I got reviews from a number of people and i could figure out only one viable plan. Application to the possible universities for Spring and keeping fingers crossed. If i get a seat in decent university with partial scholarship i would certainly go for that but in case plan fails i would plan for Fall 2013. Best of luck for your hunt too. I am right now finalizing universities for Spring Session and would post the list soon.
