Exclamation Evaluate my profile and suggest univs

    Dear anibhide

I couldn't resist myself from writing to you as you seem a perfect person for my querries.

I am going to apply for fall 2014.

    My profile

BSc Engg. Materials and Metallurgical Engineering
    BUET (Bangladesh)
    CGPA 3.04/4.00 (64%)

I worked for 3 years in a local IT firm.

I also completed my MBA last year with finance major.

I am pretty much confident about TOEFL that I will manage a good score ( my previous score was 102 in ibt format).
My old version GRE score was Q:800 V:560 AWA:3.5 ( I am planning to sit for revised GRE soon)

I am applying for fundings. Do I need to show a budget?
Can you please shortlist some universities for me?

    Thank you in advance.

First thing is that, have you decided the branch in which you want to do MS?
And you have to prepare a very strong SOP (Statement of Purpose) because, you did B.Sc. in Materials, then worked in IT firm (which probably doesn't have a materials job). You have also completed MBA which suggests that you have inclination towards business. Yet, you want to pursue MS. So you need to present a strong reason for that.
In short, a third person thinks like, "what's this guy doing? Materials, IT, MBA, Research? Is he confused?"

Your GRE and TOEFL scores are good for Mechanical branch.

It would be better to know the budget, because we have many universities having almost same rank and profile etc, but they differ largely in terms of expenditures.
For example, for you, roughly, Arizona State University, Rutgers University, Michigan State University would be good (they have comparable ranks). But their fees (including living expenses) are, $38000, $46000, $31000 respectively.

    Red face

Thank you for the autopsy of my short profile. Although, you didn’t mention anything about my CGPA

Is it going to cost me for having an Engineering degree, working in IT sector while having a different major and an MBA degree in getting an admission or Visa? If the odds are good then can you help me to get some convincing SOPs (applied to my case)? Of course it would be exacting but with the greed in my mind to do my ms in US (research) I couldn’t resist myself. Hope you will understand.

Does everyone need to show budget even if s/he is applying for grand/fund? (consider me as a novice) If the answer is yes, then my budget is 35K USD. Of course, if property counts, my budget can reach to 50k USD.

What do you think about these univs?
    Oklahoma State University (OK)
    University of Cincinnati (OH)
University of Texas (TX) at Arlington
    Texas Tech University

Can you suggest me some safe univs as well? I complete my undergrad in 2006 and I can’t take the adrenaline rush like a fresher so I want to play safe.
Your quick reply would be highly appreciated.

It would be better if you had somewhat higher CGPA (may be equivalent to 70%-80%). But now you can't change it. So concentrate on your GRE and TOEFL.
If you get 320+ in GRE, you have fairly good chance of funding. Same applies to TOEFL. You should get 105+ in iBT TOEFL.

For visa, I think, the changes in your fields will not matter much. Because, they don't care what you are doing. In visa interview, they will check your financial position, chances of you settling down there etc.

I'm not clear about your budget showing problem. You need not show your budget to anyone.
To select the university, you need to keep your budget in mind. And after selecting the university, in visa interview, you need to show that you are in a position to pay the selected university's fees.

See, property is useful, when it's liquidated. I personally think that selling the property for MS is just useless.
You can avail loan if you want. And it's easily available.

I'll get back to you with the universities you mentioned, as I am a bit busy for 4-5 days.

    Hello Shravan,

Retaking the GRE is highly recommended.
You will get admission in poor universities with this score.

Your undergrad percentage is good which shows you are capable, you should get more in GRE.
I don't know how you are preparing, but consider rethinking that.
Feel free to ask the queries.

    Hi Bharat,

You have great advantage of having patent and work experience.
    Your scores are also good.

LOR (Letter Of Recommendation) and SOP (Statement Of Purpose) also play a very important role in getting an admit. You should probably review those.

    Hi

Honestly, I wanted to do my BSc Engg. In EEE but in our academic system, departments are assigned based on the admission test. The admission authority decides who gets what department. And once they assign you into any department you can do little about it.

I wanted my career in engineering field and BUET is the number one university to pursue engineering in Bangladesh and well recognized in abroad as well. So I stick with the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. Although MME is a pretty good subject, my dream subject is EEE.

Don’t get me wrong. I know this isn’t the place to talk these craps. All I am trying is to make you understand that I am damn serious about doing my MS in EEE or ME in a fairly good University in USA. (I named ME because this is the closest of them all to MME, I guess)

You said about loan availability, can you pls elaborate.

I personally appreciate the way you and some others are helping us, who want to pursue higher degrees in US. You see, things can be perspicuous if you spell things for us or act as interpreter between the US academic system and us.

Thank you very much for being so generous.

N.B. Can you also reply to my previous queries?
