Is GRE, first stage of elimination?

    Hello Sir,

    My GRE score is Verbal - 143, Quant - 154, essay - 4.
    TOEFL - 100.
I am not happy with my GRE score and I am planning to retake GRE.

But I have a good profile - My major in Engineering is Electrical and Electronics ans I am planing to do masters in Computer Engineering.

    1) PUBLICATIONS - I have published two papers based on my research in IEEE, and I have also presented them in few Internationl conferences. I have submitted 3 more papers for publication.
    2) PATENT - I have filed a patent on my invention.
    3) INTERNSHIP - I have done summer internship at INTEL India Techonologies pvt ltd at Bangalore. I had worked as assistant researcher at INTEL for a project.
    4) GPA - I have a gpa of 8 on 10.
    5) PROJECTS - I have sucessfully done around 8 minor and major projects.
    6) AWARDS - I have few awards form state government.

IS GRE THE FIRST STAGE OF ELIMINATION?
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLITIES OF GETTING INTO GOOD UNIVERSITY.

please help me out sir, I am struck in a dilemma of considering retaking GRE.

    Thank you,

If you take gre again & if ur score is ( >160(quant) & >150(verbal)), i can tell u, u will place urself in top most universities like ucla, ucsd, uni of michigan, uni of wisc madison, gatech etc..... & if ur lucky enough u may even try for uiuc,ut austin...... u have an awesome profile. let me know area of interest & college studied...i can help u.

but, if ur going with the current gre score, u can aim for top tier universities, but u can't be sure of ur admit. GRE IS INDEED A MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR THAT DECIDES UR ADMIT.

PLS PLS retake gre, because u deserve the top ones....

    Thank you for your suggestion.

Thank you sir, for your suggestion.

I am doing my Engineering in Electrical and Electronics in PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore.

I want to do Masters in "Computer Engineering". My research field is Human Computer Interactions.
As every one dreams, even I am dreaming for top uni like, within top 15.

If you could answer these three questions it will really help me a lot.

    1) Do they consider the average of two scores or the best of two scores?

    2) With my current score and profile, which 3 or 4 universities will be moderate for me? ; It helps me to know where I am standing now.

    3) MIT EECS as per there website under requirements they say GRE is not need only TOEFL is sufficient, How do they select students based on what requirements?

I respect your advice and I will retake GRE coming august and I will try my best to cross those scores.

    Thank you sir.

    -->Best of two
MIT EECS as per there website under requirements they say GRE is not need only TOEFL is sufficient, How do they select students based on what requirements?
---> Let me tell u naveen, MIT is the top 1 among all universities in the world and selection completely based on ur research and academic performance. To get selected u need to be like among top 20 engineers in the world, if not atleast top 10 in india. I would tell u naveen, ur profile is not enough for MIT standards. Pls dont think im demoralising u, but its the fact.According to the knowledge i have, indians hardly get selected & for engineering 0% .

One thing i want to tell u, in US, universities are known for their specialties. For ex: Oregon state uni is not one among top 20, but its no 1 for its research in analog VLSI. A guy who is a MIT product in VLSI earns same as the OSU pass out, i think u understand. so, don't rely much on rankings. Research on individual universities based on their research groups, faculty, projects undergoing, research background of profs & finally the uni reputation. One more thing getting a CS admit in top uni of US is a dream come true, unless u have a GRE SCORE,acads, good research background, relevant work exp(atleast 1-2yrs really counts if it's a highly research oriented uni), decent SOP & LOR.
