Post Basic things for VISA Approval?

    Hi All,
I want to understand what factors play a key role in US Visa approval. To be specific:
    1. How does GRE score help?
    2. How back logs can affect?
    3. How bank balance can affect?
    4. How the University( and Branch/Field also) in which we got admission will affect?

Here my concern is I had 5 back logs. Can i reduce the back logs effect with a good GRE score? What score can we consider will reduce the effect of these 5 backlogs?

Will be great if i can get the answers.

    Thanks,
    Sreedhar D

If you want an objective answer to this question, go to the consulate website and see the FAQs question. To put it bluntly, VOs will deny you a visa for 2 reasons:-
    (1) Insufficient documentation
    (2) Suspected immigrant

    Speaking of the specifics:
    1) GRE scores : This shows if you have enough natural skill and will power to finish what you came here for. Unlike India, sheer hard-work won't get you through the course. You need some creativity and natural talent as well. Besides Universities have strict policies about failing. It's very easy to get kicked out of grad school. If you do get kicked out, what's the guarantee that you'll return to India? The VOs don't want you to become a burden on the US economy, should anything like this happen. Your GRE score, therefore provides them a rough estimate of the chances or odds that you will complete the course and return to India or contribute to their economy.

    2) Backlogs don't really affect your chances. I clear the VI with 9 backlogs and 2 gap years. It just depends on the way you present yourself, should the VO ever ask you WHY you got so many backlogs. If you ever start blaming the education system or anything else other than you, the VO will quickly judge you as incompetent and reject your visa. On the other hand if you take responsibility for your failures and show some improvement or show proficiency in anything else (say extra curricular activities), the VO will automatically approve your visa.

    3) Bank Balance: Very important factor. The VO wants to be sure that you won't quit your studies and start working outside campus as an illegal alien, should you ever run out of cash. Actually in the US, you can take as long as you want to finish the course. So what's really stopping you from suspending your course in one semester, work in some Pizza hut outside, then come back when you please? A big bank balance on the other hand indicates that you have no need to work and that you have enough time to commit to studies and enjoy life with your own money.

    4) University reputation: There are a lot of fake and sub-standard Universities out there who offer fake admissions to students just so that they can make it into the US soil. A lot of Indians apply to such Universities and end up working menial jobs. They won't really contribute that much to their economy. Some could even become a burden by collecting unemployment checks and so on.

Bottom-line: Be truthful and have your plans laid out. Go to the US (not just the visa interview) with a clear mind and a precise goal. There's no reason a VO would deny your visa.

PS: Don't listen to other people's visa-rejection-sob-stories. Each individual's case is different. Be confident and give the interview.
