what should be my tofel score and chances of getting into universities provided?

    HI !!
    Dis is gautham reddy,

college: NIT CALICUT, ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

    gpa : 7.71/10

gre score: 300, verbal: 139 , quant: 161...... din't get my AWA score yet i hav given my test 2 days back (20/6/2012).

Im planning to take TOFEL next month.

    10th : 82%

    intermediate : 93.9%

major project : quadrotor UAV vehicle

after my gre test i have given the following names of college to report my gre score by ets:

    University of Texas – Dallas

    University of Connecticut

    Wayne State University

    Boston University

Now my question is do i have any chance to the above universities? If at all i have what should be my TOFEL score?

i would be happy if anyone replies to my query.

    Hi,

Please mention the field u want to pursue in MS.

And u need to have toefl atleast > 100 to get into good unversities.

And think abt retaking GRE as verbal is too low. quant is okay.. verbal shud be atleast >150..

and did u do some research on universities before submittin on GRE day?? cuz being an NITian, these universities are pretty low profile i think.. anyway, think about ur scores and mention ur field so that a proper evaluation can be made.

    best of luck

Sanketh is right....Boston uni alone is the above average uni in ur list....ur verbal is low, but its still passable. So dont worry much about it. Let ur awa also come....as for ur chances, u can get admits in all (only Boston may be 50 50)...

U should try unis like ASU, Iowa state, u Pitts, u Penn, ufl, ucsd, kansas, u Houston, uic, u Delaware, u Arizona, Washington state, uc riverside, Michigan tech etc....(these unis are just rough mix of unis tht ppl wit ur marks hv got admits to)...

post ur interests and do research. Post a list of unis here and get ur evaluations and suggestions.

    hi, sankeths

    Thanks for your valuable suggestions.

I din't do much research on the given universities, but i just did profile evaluation before taking my gre with some expected scores and i got B+ grade universities and according to the list i just picked out 4 unvi's.

Coming to retaking of gre, i think i will not get much tym to prepare for the test as i have already got placed and will be busy wid my work. But, i will try if possible i will go for it.

Field : I would prefer control systems

Is it advisable to go for MS in electrical after working in a software company for an year?

On wat basis did u evaluate ur profile??
Dont rely upon grades of universities. sometimes luck plays a big role and u may get universities of better stature than expected. U never kno how a university selects the candidates.. 20% is not dependent on ur profile at all sometimes.

So apply to 2 or 3 ambitious univs..

and u can basically apply to any field in MS.. but whn u apply to electrical after doin job in CS, u wont have any advantage of work experience. u wil be as gud as a freshly passed out graduate from elec field.. so think abt it.. maybe in a year, u will be interested in software after working on it for 1 year..

and for retaking gre, u need not consider on studyin for months.. a single month of proper prep is enuf to score above 300... or atleast toefl shud be really high to compensate low gre verb score, if the univ considers that..

    hope tis helps..

    cheers!!

22+ in all the sections of Toefl will be the minimum requirement for most of the universities
    100+ is good

a note to gautam - try to have good score in speaking and listening (atleast 25+). if u search the web for feedbacks of "students' in various unis, u will see that they always complain abt the lack of clarity in theri TA and also that the TA doesnt seem to understand wat they say....a good speaking and listening score will boost ur chances of aid (in case tht there is a competitior with similar profile as urs)
check out http://www.msinus.com/electrical-enginering/1235.htm for info on univ shortlisting process
