Unhappy All rejections for Fall 2012 : GRE 324, TOEFL 111

    Hi,

I appeared for GRE in the new format on 30th September and TOEFL on 12th November 2012 respectively. My profile is as under:

    • GRE 324/340(Q: 170, V: 154); AWA: 3.5
    • TOEFL: 111/120
    • Under Graduation: 70.5% / 3.25 GPA / 7.25 CGPI - Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communications
    • Work-Ex: 6months
    • Technical Papers: 3 IEEE papers in Image Processing.

I had applied for Image Processing/Robotics to the following:

    1. University of Pennsylvania: Rejection
    2. University of Minnesota: Rejection
    3. University of Maryland, College Park: Rejection
    4. Carnegie Mellon University: Rejection
    5. Georgia Tech University: Rejection
    6. University of Arizona: Rejection
    7. University of Southern California: Results Awaited

Could someone please let me know what might have gone wrong?
The thing is I know people with a similar profile getting into one or more of the unis I had applied to.

Also is it wise to go for Jan intake now?

firstly u should check up on LORs and SOP. see if ur profs submitted the LORs on time

secondly, were ur packages complete and sent correctly?

thirdly, MAYBE ur UG marks were low. though ur gre/toefl are very good, for the unis tht u listed the cgpa would be low.

you could still try for Jan intake. But before that, pls email profs in all the colleges and tell them about ur case and ur IEEE papers etc. Request them to allow u to work with them and ask if they would agree to supervise ur MS. invariably they would tell wat is right/wrong with ur profile.

But overall it seems quite strange! U Minn and U arizona should have been within reach....but tell me one thing, when did u apply? if u wrote toefl only by november, did u apply by early jan atleaset? cuz the unis u applied to are very competitive and great profiles get rejected mainly cuz the admissions are filled by jan itself.

    Hi Akshay,

I did apply to all the universities by Dec 15th.
However, a few recos were submitted rpetty late.
Now, I have decided to apply to the following for Jan:

    1. NYU Poly
    2. NCSU:applied
    3. U of Pittsburgh: applied
    4. U of North Texas
    5. UFL

Can you please suggest if this is a good decision and what other universities should I think of?

    Thanks,
    Parth

See if the unis accept offline recommendations by post. In tat case u can send the lors along with ur transcripts...

And ur list seems fine. Maybe u can consider ut Dallas in place of unt...maybe u Delaware or suny buffalo...I'm still wondering wat went wrong in ur case.

Chase ur profs and get ur lor by paper (on college letterhead) and send it along with transcripts. Tat way u can be sure about reaching on time.

All the best parth! It'll work out this time :-) believe in it.

    Hey Akshay,

    Thanks for the quick response.
I was wondering what can be a few ambitious universities that I can include.
Also can you comment if the list is good for Image Processing?
And why do you suggest UTD over UNT?

    Hey Akshay,

NW gave me a chance to apply for fall. And I did that. However I just got a rejection from them.
Also could you suggest an ambitious university or two for the Jan intake?
Also I am thinking of keeping VLSI as an option and will be applying to two unis for the same.
    Please advise.

    Regards,
    Parth

It took me about two months and an hour or two a day.
However, I did very little for AWA. I suggest you prepare for that alteast for about two weeks.
I gave it just 3 days.
Also try and finish the barron's word list.
It helps. And Math isnt that tough.

Dude I guess you should check the minimum score required in AWA for all the universities you have applied for. I think its probably higher than what you scored in AWA.
