    MS-PhD in microelectronics/VLSi

    Hi
    Following is my profile:

    GRE 1470(quant 800/verbal 670)
    TOEFL 116/120
    UG CGPA 9.84/10
    Workex 22 months(Freescale Semiconductor)
    PGDM from IIM Bangalore (2012)

I'm interested in doing MS-Phd in microelectronics or VLSI in Fall 2013. Please advise me on my chances and give me a ranking of universities for these specific streams. Also, which good universities can i apply to for Spring 2013?

ur profile is excellent...yu'd get some really good unis. for Fall 2013 its a good time to go. Spring intakes are lesser, they are fickle in terms of profiles accepted, and there is almost nil chances of funding. PLUS not all streams are avlbl in spring.

Actually if u look at vlsi, oregon state is almost the best for analog vlsi and U Mass amherst is great for digital vlsi (but these colls wont actually rank in top 10).

But u can look at UIUC, UMCP, U wisc, U michigan, Gerogia tech, CMU, UCLA.

the above should be moderately ambitious for u, but still within reach.

U can look at NCSU, Penn state, TAMU, U minesotta, U washiongton, Northwestern, U penn etc...they are excellent unis withing ur reach...

pls do more research and check who offer good courses for ur liking.

Thank you for the advice. I'm currently working for an IT firm with a Tech Sales profile. With an R&D background, and with an MBA degree (which i did primarily to polish my soft skills), does it sound feasible to do an MS in electronics? Will there be any negative effect of having an MBA ? People usually do an MBA to get away from the technical domain but technology is my passion and i still want to pursue it. Please advise me.

A prior degree will NEVER affect ur chances. And you can surely do am MS. Mention in ur sop about how its ur passion....colleges there will appreciate genuine students. You stand a good chance at many A league unis.
