Before Year 2008
Till the year 2007,
60% of MS graduates use to get permanent job offers
immediately completion of their degree. Remaining
students use to approach consultancies which provide
free accommodation, training and placements. They use to
get job within 3 months of completion of master’s
degree.
Period 2008 - 2010
Suddenly the situation got changed with the Great
Recession 2008.
Period 2008-2010 is the worst one where masters students
suffered a lot with lack of job opportunities and visa
sponsorships. There are many situations where the MS
freshers rejected for job positions for not being a US
Citizen. Companies are not willing to sponsor work
permit visa. Students sticked to schools and they didn’t
graduate. Some continued to PhD after masters. They
scared for the market situation outside and don’t want
to graduate.
May students left the country in 2008, since they didn’t
find employer to sponsor H1b visa. Some of them were
sent out of the country by employers, because of tough
visa rules and USCIS’s eye on Desi consulting companies.
Lot of students didn’t get their OPT extension to stasy
in USA and letf the country. Employers scared to hire MS
graduates and to give OPT Extension letter. Almost there
was a decline of 25% in the number of students applying
for US F1 Visa at that time.
After 2010
Those tough days are over now. Future is going to be
much promising to the MS in US students.
Even though US is not completely out of recession,
Masters students are getting better opportunities after
the completion of their degree. Employers are offering
good salary packages and again started sponsoring H1Bs
and Green card. Now, MS freshers are selling like hot
cakes in the current market. Particularly, IT consulting
fields is booming with opportunities. There are no
direct H1B candidates from India. Most of the
Consultancies stopped sponsoring H1B visas to the
candidates in India. So, US employers have to hire
Masters Graduates, the only resources in the market.
