GRE Verbal and Quant scores required for US University admissions
--If your quant score is 161+ and verbal 146+ and you belong to a country which is not English speaking; your are in for most options. They put a lot more importance on quant in case of engineering courses. But this is true for MS not Phd--GRE centric universities are mostly average ones. This is due to a simple reason; that is they want to embellish their statistics by highlighting GRE toppers.
Average Revised GRE Scores for Top US Universities for Masters and PhD
GRE Scores for Engineering Programs>>
So the two things: a GRE centric university and a highly rated university are mutually exclusive.
However, top universities want their students to have excellent score, but to add to this, I'd say that its given 20-40% importance for top institutions and not more than that.
The idea that you'll discuss with them as per your research interests is paramount for getting the admit.
So work on that distinct research idea and make your profile much more attractive than other people even with 330+ scores.
--Without knowing quants score how can you people suggest anyone to retake GRE. kindly ask for quants at-least.
Top 10 colleges' average quant score : 162.5
So please take alot of care to ask someone to retake GRE
--quant 160+ won't be a problem for any college. However verbal below 146 can be detrimental for some institutions.
Eg- TAMU , ASU and some other colleges mention their lower end cutoff - 146 ..
However, most institutions aren't particular about these cutoffs still it should be considered. Note the fact that 146 being the minimal requirement, their average can be much higher. For example- avg for TAMU is 154 in verbal. But, that would mean there were sufficient number of students whose score was lesser than 154 as 154 being their 50th percentile score.
Kindly look forward to admission requirements of intended institutions and make a choice.
GRE Test preparation
--For verbal don't fear vocab. In the real test you'll realize that vocabulary was never much of a problem. Instead practice RCs .--Try to get one manhattan guide.
For instance, I'll suggest an RC guide.
You'll learn alot about RCs.
Plus you'll get 6 online tests.
Time these 6 tests accordingly.
1month = 30 days.
--Give one test after each 3 day window
1st - ETS powerprep 1
then 6 manhattan
then 2nd- ets powerprep .
Give a lot of time to learn from your mistakes you commit to in these tests.
--A small Verbal strategy :
Go to vocabulary.com
Make your account.
Open learn lists. Make your own list. Add the words from each test you come across. And Add the words you feel were jargon for you. That ways you'll focus on words you aren't that comfortable with.
--For Phd ... I would want to say that average verbal score is not meagre.
Research papers and SOP are the most detrimental factors for PHD !...
PS quants for engineering major will definitely have an edge over verbal !!! ..
but in case of PHD .. one should be cautious about verbal and awa ...
In case of MS However, I believe verbal won't play much role. So rather than comparing the total Gre scores .. like 315 vs 322 .. compare quants with verbal benching nearby 150s ..
I would rate 165 + 150 much much more than 157+158 ....
- Also check for rolling admissions. As you already might know, it means that university starts to evaluate the profiles as soon as they reach them. They don't wait for the specific deadline. To make the most of it, apply earlier to these universities to smoke up the competition.
PS please google about the list universities with these kind of admits and you'll easily find out.
And guys do share the post if you like it .
