    IELTS is the International English Language Testing System, the world’s most popular English language proficiency test. First released in 1989, IELTS was one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing, and continues to set the standard for English language testing today. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

    Recognizing the U.S. as the top destination for international students, IELTS strategically established a U.S. presence in 1997. Based in Los Angeles, IELTS International seeks to build a successful and sustainable business in the U.S. through gaining recognition of its testing system in the U.S educational sector, and by growing domestic IELTS candidature and test center network capacity and reach. IELTS tests were offered at a network of 60 U.S. locations in 2012, with plans to strategically expand to other geographic areas during 2013 and beyond.

    The Chief Executive Officer reports to the IELTS USA Board of Directors that is comprised of representatives from the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. The CEO is charged with building a successful and sustainable business in the U.S. through gaining recognition of IELTS testing system in the U.S educational sector, and by growing domestic IELTS candidature and test center network capacity and reach. The CEO oversees a current team of nine individuals, including a Testing Network Manager for the test center network, a Recognition Manager responsible for increasing recognition at U.S. institutions and stakeholder relations, a Marketing Manager and an Operations Manager. The CEO and the staff go through a thoughtful strategic and business planning process each year to produce the IELTS USA Business Plan.

    Key goals for the new CEO are:


    • Establish and maintain credibility with the various stakeholders;



    • Continue to increase and extend IELTS recognition among U.S. institutions and organizations;



    • Increase the number of tests delivered in the U.S.;



    • Address competitive threats by strengthening IELTS’ reputation through proactive marketing, high-visibility activities including IELTS stakeholder events and promotions.


    Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree; Substantial experience and demonstrable track record at a senior management level with a high level of accountability at least some of which should be with a similar international organization; Cross cultural sensitivity along with a global orientation and a genuine interest in understanding others; Thorough and intimate knowledge of higher educational landscape in the United States. This includes an understanding of undergraduate and graduate international admission and enrollment trends and issues and the associated implications for the testing market for international students; A keen understanding in the field of English language teaching or testing; Demonstrated high level skills and experience in business development, with a track record of success that indicates high level business acumen and an entrepreneurial approach. Strategic, analytical and visioning skills; Proven leadership and team-building skills: track record of hiring, motivating, mentoring, and empowering staff members (at least four or five), and instilling accountability with staff. Demonstrated commitment to process improvement and of establishing a corresponding ethos among staff; A sound knowledge of business processes and management practices, especially business planning and strategy formulation. Experience with budgeting, financial management, and forecasting, including full P&L responsibility, along with strong financial acumen is needed; Proven track record of developing internal and external relationships within a global footprint. Ability to represent the organization at the highest level with key stakeholders.
