• Ban on OPT? US to end Work Permit for Foreign Students?

    Senator Charles Grassley called for a ban on OPT (Optional Practical Training). OPT provides work permit for students up to 27 months after completion of Masters, Phd or Under graduation in USA. Grassley’s call for ban on OPT shocked 1 Million community of International students in USA.

    Why to Ban OPT (Optional Practical Training) work permit?

    Grassley criticized OPT program for the following reasons

    • US Federal Govt doesn't know where these thousands of foreign students are located, who they are working for and what exactly they are doing. Govt is not maintaining a proper database of these students. OPT program authorizing around 560,000 international students every year to work in USA after completion of their academic program at US University.
    • Recent Terror attacks were done by immigrants who entered into US as foreign students.
    • Student are using OPT for Unauthorized employment like working in a different field which is not related to their US Education.
    • Homeland Security is enabling students to work on OPT without any specific visa or background check. Masters student over here will use old F1 Visa to work on OPT. There is no special temporary work permit visa category for OPT students.
    • OPT allows unlimited number of foreign students to work in USA which poses threat to opportunities of US Citizens.
    • There is no payroll tax for Employer or Student for the entire 29 month period which is saving for employer/student up to 10000$ for a hire. It means $10000 is taken away by each OPT job from US Govt. US Employers are considering OPT students over US Citizens for saving tax money.


    What Grassley Asked about OPT Ban

    In a letter to DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson last week, Grassley called for a moratorium on OPT "until you can personally certify that the program is secure and that the department can locate all foreign students with OPT authorization."

    Currently those who finished masters in UK should leave UK after education. MS in US is on the verge of becoming MS in UK after Grassley's efforts. If a student is not allowed work in USA after masters, no use in spending money for maters and it's not even good to study masters in USA. Though they come to US on F1 visa, 99% of the Indian students go to USA just to work and earn money

    Let us hope DHS will not take any negative action on OPT Program and hurt foreign students in USA.

      This is a Big Shock to all the Existing Foreign Students and New Students who are planning to do MS.
      This is not only loss to the Students but also to US Economy as there won't be further New Admissions.

      But the letter was sent in 2012... Is it still a concern for the students who ar currently enrolled in US universities?

      Mr. Grassley is pandering to his base. The GOP is always hooting and hollering about the 'foreigners' because they are unwilling to take responsibility for their failure to govern. It's all a distraction, I don't see OPT ending any time soon.

      We foreign students pay double the fee as US citizens, study hard and end up having a big dept to banks or parents, the opt is the time to enjoy the fruits of the effort we put in our lifes, opt is one if the reasons why we come to US, that atleast after studies we and repay the dept, and reason why we don't go to UK, Canada gives PR to students after 2 years of work permit after MS, it's a safe bet atleast we don't end up in dept to have the Opt, if not who will be willing to invest without a return.

      Greedy, unlawful, and opportunistic Indians are digging the grave to all the foreign STEM graduates in USA. And the dumb US policy makers things that STEM is all IT.
